Name: Stephanie
Garrett
State: Minnesota
When and why did you start running? I started running in January of 2011 to lose weight. My husband and I had
grown comfortably close to one another on the couch. To lose weight we read a
lot of articles about learning to run and started a couch to 5k program.
What is your favorite race and race distance?
My favorite race is the Team Ortho Monster Dash in
late October and my favorite distance is the half marathon.
What is your race day routine? My race day routine starts the night before – making sure that all of my
race day gear is laid out in our workout room everything from my race day
outfit, race bib, shoes, and Garmin. Then I usually only get 4-5 hours of sleep
because I am so excited for the next day. Morning of the race usually consists
of making sure my three beagles are ready for their day: a walk and food. Then
it is prepping my breakfast of a protein shake and getting my race belt ready:
smart water, GU gels, my phone and iPod.
What is your most favorite piece of running
gear? My Lululemon Run:Dash & Dart Shorts. I have two
pairs and absolutely love how long they are on my legs and these shorts have a
zipper back pocket and side pockets to hold my GU gels.
Do you follow any diet or take any specific
supplements that complement your running? My husband
and I adapted the Paleo lifestyle in the beginning of 2012; teaching our bodies
to burn fats instead of grain based carbohydrates. At first I was very
resistant to the change but I have run 4 half marathons, 2 – 10 mile races, 2 –
15ks and 1 full marathon following the Paleo lifestyle. I am also starting to
use Generation UCan to enhance fat utilization as I begin adding weight lifting
to the routine as well as running.
What do you wish you’d known when you first
started running? That running is not as easy as it
looks and the run/walk method – I run all training runs and races using this
method. I was not introduced to the run/walk method until 8 months after I
started running and we chose to attend running clinics to help learn more about
how to run.
What is your fondest running memory? Crossing the finish line of the Twin Cities Marathon last year on October
6th, 2013.
What is one thing that most people do not
know about you? That I am in the October 2013
issue of Minnesota Monthly magazine as 1 of 8 featured runners for the TC
Marathon (I am the first timer) and I am the featured runner for the TC
Marathon 30 minute Marathon special filmed by Fox Sports North and now on You
Tube. For the marathon special a Fox Sports North film crew followed me on my
first marathon journey and the film crew followed my husband, my sorority
sister and her husband on the course also as they cheered me through all 26.2
miles.
