When and why did you start running? I started running in February of this year as a part
of my epic life change to get healthy and in shape. One of my first goals was
training for running my first 5k.
What is your favorite race and race distance? I’ve run several 5k races by now as
well as a couple 10k races and am training for a half marathon. However, I
really love doing the 5k. It's long enough to get into your groove without
leaving you kind of exhausted. Maybe that will change as I become a more
experienced runner, but right now, I love cranking out a couple miles and then
tagging out.
My favorite race so far has been the
Torchlight 5k. It was held downtown in Chicago along the lakefront and was in
the evening, so it was kind of lovely to watch the sun go down and the city
light up as we ran.
What is your race day routine? If it’s a morning race, I get up, stretch a little bit, pull
on my race clothes and head over to the race. I typically drink very little and
eat a small snack before the race because I know that I’ll have to pee like
halfway through. Haha. When I get there I get all checked in, etc and then go
try to see what I can of the course so that I have a general idea of what I’m
heading into. I usually make sure I hit the bathroom one last time and do a
little final stretching before getting my music, headphones, and heart rate
monitor in place and starting.
What is your most favorite piece of running gear? I’d say it’s a toss-up between my
shoes and my music. My trainer would tell you that I am never without either
one of them. I am madly in love with my Merrell Pace running shoes and after
having transitioned to minimalist running, I can’t imagine ever going back. And
my music helps me focus and push through the miles, though it’s mostly
background noise. 9 times out of 10, I just pick whatever song I am currently
digging and just throw it on repeat while I run.
Do you follow any diet or take any specific supplements that complement
your running? I
don’t really follow any specific diet. I eat healthy and try to avoid a lot of
overly refined or processed foods, but mostly it is just eating healthy. My
only rule of thumb is to eat or drink something with protein in it within 45
minutes of finishing to help with recovery, etc.
What do you wish you’d known when you first started running? That no matter how well I do, that
it’s addicting and I will want to do more, faster, better, longer, etc. I’m
sure someone (or multiple someone’s) probably told me that at the beginning,
but I had always hated running, so I didn't really believe them. How else can
you explain my deciding to sign up for a half marathon for my one year running
anniversary?
What is your fondest running memory? I kind of love them all, but probably my second race.
My trainer and I ran both my first and second race together. The first was
awesome because I had never completed one, but the second was amazing because I
blew away my first time and felt SO accomplished and like I was making really
incredible progress. Plus he got super excited, which also made me super proud
of myself.
What is one thing that most people do not know about you? I am actually a pretty shy person
until you get to know me. My personality online is so much bigger than if you
were ever to randomly meet me in real life. I tend to be kind of quiet and get
to know people before my loud, energetic, goofy personality really comes out.
